Cointreau's 1st Pregnancy Diary - June 2006 - August 2006

August 27, 2006 - Babies now born!
Cointreau has now delivered 4 beautiful babies. Please Click Here to view her Kitten Diary.

August 23, 2006 (Just 3 days to go!)
I can't believe how fast Cointreau's pregnancy has just flown by and that we only have 3 days to go. Although chances are, she will not give birth on her due date, she will go overdue by a day as that is what the majority of our ladies seem to do. I'm really looking forward to her litter being born, but perhaps not as much as Cointreau herself is because I swear she has a tummy full of Owen's and Beckham's! They just seem to kick the heck out of her all day and all night. It's a wonder she manages to get any rest at all. She's at that point now where she is feeling rather uncomfortable which is no surprise and I am hoping that she doesn't really have any more than 3 babies, 4 at the most. This would be a lovely number for a first time mummy. Cointreau's appetite is still incredibly large and she is certainly eating as if she is feeding an army. She has her "box" set up in our bedroom, in the wardrobe in fact and although she has been in and out of it a few times, she still prefers to sleep on the bed with us (at least until I accidentally roll over in the middle of the night and kick her off) so when the time comes and she is ready to go into labour, we may have to move the box up onto our bed if she will feel more comfortable there. This is now the last entry for Cointreau's pregnancy diary so please do check back from Saturday onwards for news of the new arrivals.

August 16, 2006 (almost 8 weeks pregnant)
Well time has gotten away from us yet again and this entry went online very late and without photos. Each year, we tend to take it easy this week and do not spend a lot of time on our computers as it is our wedding anniversary followed by Graham's birthday so we do try to have some "family time" in August. Of course this means that we are then behind with a number of things and need to play "Catch Up" which is what I'm doing right now as I rather quickly try to type a short entry for Cointreau's Pregnancy Diary. There's been a few changes in the way Cointreau now lives, for lack of a better word. Up until a week ago, she would spend her days and nights with the rest of the cat family however this has now changed totally. During the day, Cointreau is in the back room with Graham where he is all day long, and she is away from the other cats although we do sometimes put Cacao and Amaretto in there with her so she has feline company as well as the company of Graham all day long. She can also still see all of our other cats through the screen door that separates the back room from the rest of the home. The reason we did this is because Tia Lusso has become a tad hormonal and has been attacking Cointreau which obviously is not good in her current condition. Cointreau is now much happier and she spends her evenings with us sleeping in our bedroom at night. This is something we would have done regardless of Tia Lusso though as this is Cointreau's first litter and she's starting to get a little confused by the changes in her body, particularly the little footballers who continue to kick the heck out of her stomach! So she has been much more attention seeking and she wants to be with us all of the time which is perfectly natural for a first time mum.

August 9, 2006 (almost 7 weeks pregnant)
Well, Cointreau has gone from having no "swollen" abdomen, to having a lovely swollen abdomen and she is incredibly heavy. I am actually rather astounded at just how rapidly she went from not showing at all, to just expanding at such a fast pace. She is positively blooming now and I have put her on quite a few extra meals during the day. These meals comprise of Hi Life and Natures Menu (kitten pouches), as well as cooked chicken and mince, all of which she loves. At the moment she still has approximately 17 days to go until she is due to give birth so the time is drawing much nearer. One thing that really surprises me with Cointreau is that considering she is going to be a first time mummy, she is taking this whole "pregnancy lark" in her stride and whereas some new mum's become very clingy with their human families during the last few weeks, Cointreau just seems to go with the flow. I do hope this means that when she goes into labour, she will be equally as relaxed. The little "cat house" that Cointreau is pictured in for some of the photographs is her favourite little spot where she likes to spend a lot of her time during the day. After breakfast of a morning she darts straight out of the window, into the cat run and then into "her" little house.

August 2, 2006 (almost 6 weeks pregnant)
There is no entry at all for this week due to the fact that we are still trying to settle into our new home and make it "right". Hopefully, next week I will have a bit more time.

July 26, 2006 (almost 5 weeks pregnant)
At almost 5 weeks into the pregnancy, I have to say that Cointreau looks as if she has not expanded at all! Her nipples are still incredibly bright pink and protruding which does indicate that she is still pregnant and it is possible that she may be one of those queens who doesn't start to expand until much later in the pregnancy, although, with just over 4 weeks to go, I am starting to wonder just what is going on exactly. In herself, Cointreau is just fine, and despite the heat wave that we are still having, she is coping extremely well. I have now started feeding her extra meals in the form of wet foods, as well as home cooked meals 3 times a day now. Part of the problem is the fact that because it is so hot, none of the cats are particularly keen on eating a great deal at the moment, Cointreau included. Even though we have the air conditioning on in the back room where the cats and I spend most of the time, it's not making a huge amount of difference. Still, maybe she will surprise me and start to expand in a week's time.

July 19, 2006 (almost 4 weeks pregnant)
Well I don't know about the house move affecting Cointreau's pregnancy, but it has certainly addled my own brain! Two nights ago I looked at Cointreau and was convinced that the pregnancy had gone horribly wrong as I had been expecting her to look much, much larger than she was. I spoke with Graham and told him that even though she still has very large, protruding, bright pink nipples, I was not sure that she was in fact still pregnant because to my mind, at 6 weeks into the pregnancy she should be a lot larger. Sure enough, the following day, it dawned on me that she wasn't fully 4 weeks pregnant yet so of course she wouldn't be huge. I did feel rather stupid to say the least! At the moment, she has not gained a great deal of weight, however it is very early days yet and we still have a long way to go. The main thing that is concerning me at the moment is this heat we are having and although Cointreau doesn't appear to be affected at all by it, I have been putting the air conditioner on in the back room for the cats and for Cointreau so that it remains cool. She does seem to have a good appetite and she is certainly very happy in herself and her coat is incredibly soft to touch. I guess this means that so far, all is going quite well which is a huge relief. Now that we are starting to get back to normal in the new house, you can expect to see regularly weekly updates of the pregnancy diary so please don't forget to check back next week for another update.

June 22, 2006 (The Honeymoon)

We really had to think hard about whether or not to mate Cointreau for a couple of reasons. One of which being that we were still not sure whether or not the house we had viewed was going to become ours or not and we had to know for certain where we were going to live as we couldn't have pregnant cats and no home to go to! This problem has now been solved as we have had confirmation that the house is ours and we will be well and truly settled in before Cointreau gives birth. The other thing that concerned us is that Cointreau is actually only 9 months of age which is extremely young for mating. We normally like to wait until they have had 3 calls and are approximately 11 months old. Cointreau had other ideas though because yesterday, on the 21st, she came into full call again and this is her 4th full call and there was no way we could have put off her honeymoon for another call. As some of you may be aware, her grandmother had to be spayed after just 2 litters due to Pyometra, and Pyo is hereditary and this is why a queen should never call more than 3 times without being mated. The other option would have been to put her on Ovarid (the pill), however, we personally do not believe in using this, nor does our vet, and most certainly not on a maiden queen. Cointreau is quite a big girl and very mature and we feel that she will be able to cope with the pregnancy and birth despite her age. This is a mating that I have been looking forward to in the respect that Cointreau is going to make such a great mum. Not only does this run in her family, but for months now, she has been playing with, and mothering the babies that we have had in the home. She has such a wonderful temperament, as does Sheridans so the babies will be delightful. If the honeymoon has been successful, Cointreau's babies will be due approximately August 26. Cointreau will be due to pink up around July 13, so please do check back then for confirmation of her pregnancy.
