Kitten Diaries
Tia Maria
December 2003
Tia Maria's 1st Kitten Diary - December 2003 to march 2004
Day 55- February 9, 2004
Nearly had a coronary this morning when I was on the phone to someone and hubby came downstairs telling me there were 6 babies missing!!! After a frantic search of the downstairs foyer, the hallway, the bathroom, the 6 missing babies were discovered sound asleep behind the ottoman. As I type this entry, I have Tia and 2 babies on my lap, one climbing up my legs and one sitting behind me. One of these days I'll learn not to do a diary entry when the babies are awake! The girls didn't come downstairs today until about 12.30 as they were having too much run upstairs running about all over the place. I had to worm the babies again this week which is always a bit of a battle, however fortunately, we managed it without too many problems, apart from the normal mess. Tia's calling is getting louder and more frantic every day and I am just waiting for the day when she stops.................if she ever does! I had some lovely cuddles with the girls this afternoon as they were all sitting/sleeping on my lap. One of my favourite times is when they are starting to settle down from their mad play time and just want to sit quietly and get lots of strokes behind the ears and under the chin.

Day 54- February 8, 2004
As promised, yesterday's photos have now been added to the diary. I haven't actually taken any photos yet today so today's photos will go online either later today or tomorrow. We had a really lovely visit today with Ian and Mary who will be Phoebe's new owners and they are two of the loveliest people you could ever meet. It's always nice to get a chance to show off our lovely babies and we are so very lucky as breeders that our babies are going to such great homes. Fortunately they arrived when the Charmed Ones were awake. The only sad part about the visit is that it reminded me that I only have our little angels for another 6 weeks and then they'll be leaving me. Tia is calling again at the moment and is extremely loud and I really don't know how the babies manage to sleep through her screaming. When the Charmed Ones are in the Kitten Room, they no longer choose to sleep in their cat bed (which is really a dog bed) as they much prefer to sleep on the chair in the room. They cope really well with the stairs now and it's so funny to watch them go up and down the stairs. Phoebe definitely seems to prefer dry kitten food to any other type. Although she eats morning and evening meals of wet food, she generally won't touch the wet food during the day but will eat the dry food off and on all day. Paige, Pru and Piper still eat all their wet food, as well as eating the dry food. At the moment, all 4 girls are sound asleep so it is rather peaceful here at the moment which means I can catch up with the washing and ironing.

Day 53- February 7, 2004
Today's diary is very short unfortunately as I will not be around today which is why I have put it online so early in the day. The Charmed Ones are really loving their new areas now and there is absolutely nothing that they can destroy upstairs, unlike my chair downstairs. It does mean that we have to be extra careful now when we go upstairs because you never know exactly where the babies are going to spring out from. They had good weight gains again last night. All for babies spent over an hour asleep on my lap late yesterday afternoon and I couldn't move anywhere at all. Not even to get a drink because obviously I couldn't have disturbed them while they were asleep. When they are awake and playing they are little terrors but when they are asleep they are absolute little angels. Paige & Piper are the 2 in the Siamese litter who, at times, would much rather come and sleep on my lap than in the bed with the other little babies and their mums. Phoebe is still the most vocal of the Siamese litter. Today's photos will go online tomorrow.

Day 52- February 6, 2004
For the first time since I started these diaries, today's entry is the same in both diaries. The photos however, are different. It's not due to lack of time, but due to the fact that I made the decision yesterday to let the babies start to grow up a bit. Up until now, as most of your know, our babies spend their evenings in the Kitten Room upstairs and then during they day, they are brought downstairs between 9am-10am to spend the day in the room with me down here so that can get used to people coming and going and all other household noises. It's obviously working well because we have happy, well adjusted babies at this point. The problem however, is that up until this point, both litters were beginning to think that their entire lives consist of just one room and they have no idea of the big world out there called "A House". I made the decision last night, that when I fed the babies their dinner, I would leave the door open and they could venture out and explore the upstairs part of the house. I did however, stay there watching them to make sure nothing happened to any of them. The babies came tearing out of their room, and just went running all over the place, into the bathroom, up and down the hallway, they were hiding behind doors and scaring each other, sniffing everything they could and generally really enjoying themselves. So I put their food down and let them have dinner. After dinner, I went downstairs with the plates and left them to it for about 5 minutes. I was a bit worried at what I would find when I went back up but you have to let them be independent sometimes and anyway, both mums were with them so I knew the babies would be fine. When I went back up they were still having a great time, they thought all their Christmases had come at once! The mum's weren't so sure as now they had their 8 little ones going anywhere they wanted. So Cacao kept walking up and down the hallway checking them all, Tia sat on the 2nd step from the top and as soon as any of the babies ventured near the stairs, she was there to turn them away. Obviously the babies don't need me to protect them and keep them safe because their mums do such a wonderful job. I thought I'd give them another 15 minutes of exploring so I went into the bedroom and then 10 minutes later came running out because I heard a massive squeal from one of the babies. Thinking the worst I went out only to find poor Xena sitting on one of the cat beds in the hallway crying because that nasty Paige had done something horrible to her! So Xena got lots of cuddles and felt much better after that. This morning, I repeated the procedure when I fed them their breakfast and the babies came tearing out of the room and went running up the hall and started playing with each other. I then came downstairs to sort out the washing etc. and just left them all up there doing whatever they wanted. When it was time to then bring them downstairs, I opened the door to the stairs and found to my surprise that all 8 babies were either already at the bottom of the stairs (no not in a heap) whilst others were still coming down. Obviously they figured out how to maneuver down the stairs with no incidents. As it all seemed to work so well, from now on the babies can have the run of the upstairs after breakfast until they come down, and then again of an evening. Hopefully, this will teach them that their little world isn't just one big room, and they will also hopefully get used to us humans thumping up and down the stairs, turning on the shower etc. etc. At the time of writing this, all babies are sound asleep in their cat bed with their mummies, down here in the room with me. It's due to the fact that they are sleeping that I managed to get today's entry written in one go, as opposed to yesterday when they created havoc for hours on end and the diary took me forever to finish.

Day 51- February 5, 2004
As I write today's entry, I have Paige sitting up on my shoulder and a desk littered with paperwork for the Charmed Ones new slaves. Phoebe and Pru are in the cat bed chewing each other's ears and Piper is sound asleep as are the Little Warriors and both mums. For the first time since they have been downstairs, I had the back door open (it leads straight into the cat run outside) and put a barrier up so they couldn't get out. The mums thought it was great as they could then go out if they chose to. The Charmed Ones must have thought it wasn't too bad as they kept climbing over the barrier. By the time 12.30 came though, the door had to be shut as it was getting quite cold. Paige has been in a real naughty mood today and has been awake a lot more than the others. She has been jumping on all the chairs, climbing on top of the computer systems, and has been deliberately tormenting both mums by chewing on their tails and ears. It's the first day in ages that someone has outdone Phoebe in naughtiness.

Day 50- February 4, 2004
Poor Phoebe had a little accident last night. She fell off the ottoman onto the floor. Fortunately she wasn't hurt but her ego was damaged in a big way! She let me know about it for the next 20 minutes and then went straight to mum for some comfort. All 4 girls got in a lot of trouble from Cacao last night. Cacao was lying down on the little sofa and the girls kept taking flying leaps onto her face and then running away and would then come back and do it again. So as they started to run over to her, she grabbed them, growled at them and bit them on the ear and would not let them go. They still didn't learn though and came back to try again. All of them will now eat the dry kitten food that's left out for them constantly and I'm pleased because up until recently there were only 2 that I had seen eating it so it's a big relief. Their weight gains were back to normal last night after such big gains the night before. To be honest there really isn't a need to weigh them any longer now that they are all eating well. I got them a new little scratch toy yesterday and they all love it and fortunately know exactly what to do with it which may same my office chair from being ruined any further. They no longer need to climb to reach high furniture as they are at the stage where they can just jump straight from the floor onto something. There is the odd occasion when they miss which is very funny (for me not for them) but their little muscles are developing really well now. I'm still amazed at how active and naughty they are when they are awake. Both Paige and Pru fell off the CD rack this morning when they were climbing it. It might not have been so bad but they both fell on top of poor Piper's head and she was most distressed.

Day 49 - February 3, 2004 (7 weeks old today)

It wasn't until I started doing today's diary that I realised the Charmed Ones are now 7 weeks old. It really has flown by. All 4 girls made good gains last night, ranging from 30 grams to 60 grams so they're obviously doing really well on a combination of their mum, their kitten glop and the dry food. They all use their litter tray now, but every now and again, I see that one of them has forgotten and decides to go to the toilet in the bed. I've now sent off the girls registration form so hopefully I won't have made any errors on the application and we should receive that back in the new few weeks. The next step will be to book our little ones in for the first set of vaccinations which will be done when they are 9 weeks old. All 4 girls seem to share their mother's love for "beanie toys". For those of you who don't know our Tia, then one of her favourite toys in the whole world are little beanie toys. She does 2 things with them, she either drags them all around the house dropping them in every water bowl she passes, then gets them out and carries them to the next water bowl, OR, she brings them to me to play "fetch" with her. The Charmed Ones are now seen constantly with a beanie toy in bed with them, or they are dragging them around the room. Fortunately, they haven't started dropping them in the water bowls yet.
