Day 26 - August 3, 2007
Today, I am moderately happy with our recent weight gains for Morse and Sherlock. When I am in the kitten room and am handling the babies, I can't help but feel that they are so very tiny, and yes they are certainly not the biggest babies we have ever had, however, they have been making steady gains and are doing very well. Not just those 2 though, as Miss Marple and Nancy Drew are also coming along nicely. Miss Marple is quite a big young lady at the moment, whereas Nancy Drew is more petite but it is still such very early days and there are still so many changes that our babies will go through as they mature. They are quite active little children though and they can be funny to watch as they play with each other because as you can imagine, their stalking and pouncing skills are certainly not finely tuned as this young age and there are lots of "bumps" and "near misses" and surprised looks when things don't quite work out according to plan. Tia Lusso is starting to look thin which is something I will be closely monitoring. I have been expecting this for a while now because to look after this many babies is not easy at all and takes so much out of her. I will be increasing her meals of Hills a/d now in the hopes this will make a difference.

Day 25 - August 2, 2007
There are no entries for today sorry as we have had quite a bit going on and things seem to be all over the place at the moment.

Day 24 - August 1, 2007
Well, life does go on, even after death, although with the greatest of pain and difficulty I have to say. I did take photos of our Detectives today, albeit not great ones as you can probably tell. It was hard to do their photos as I kept looking for the photos of our "blue" baby before I remembered that he is no longer here. At the present time, our Detectives all seem to be doing okay. One blessing is that now, all 4 babies will eat directly from the plate, but obviously with some encouragement. They don't just automatically go to the plate remembering that the food is there, but if I put them directly in front of the plate and direct their noses to the meal, they will happily tuck in, particularly little Morse. Now that he has gotten the hang of weaning, he is becoming very enthusiastic about food. I am still syringe feeding Morse and Sherlock although this has now been reduced to 3-4 hourly as the babies are over the week of age mark now.

Day 23 - July 31, 2007

I did have intentions of taking photos today, however, the Water Babies have been moved into the 2nd kitten room, along with Lucy, the Nuts and the Detectives, and this means that I am up at every single sound, just waiting for a war to break out. So I am getting nothing done at all today as I've not been able to spend more than 10 minutes on any one thing as I am up and down constantly.

Our sudden loss of Frost still has not sunk in. When you are fighting for a baby over a period of days or weeks, and if that baby starts to fade, whilst the heartbreak is the same, in a way, you aren't surprised but in the situation with Frost, it has been totally different. We have bred approximately 100 kittens and not ever experienced something like this before. As per usual, Jo, from Brook Veterinary Surgery has been absolutely marvellous. I phoned the vets yesterday morning and left a message for Jo. When Jo got in, she phoned and I explained the situation and she agreed to take a look at Frost for me. I drove him there just after lunch yesterday and around 6pm last night, Jo phoned me with the results of the post mortem. There was no obstruction in the throat, mouth, all the organs were perfectly normal, there was nothing untoward at all. Basically, the cause of death is unknown. We had a chat and, God forbid, should we lose another baby, then another post mortem will be done only this time, at the labs in Glasgow where a very thorough examination can be carried out, although we do know from having had previous pm's done, that even then, results can be inconclusive. I think one of my biggest fears was finding out that perhaps Frosts' organs had not developed properly, or something similar to that because as you know, the mating between Lucy and Ashanti is inbreeding, done solely to improve the tabby pattern, not the type because Ashanti has outstanding type, but as we know, if there is just one bad gene there, it will be doubled up on with inbreeding and will come out in the kittens. (The Nuts are a product of line breeding.) So it is a relief on one hand to know that from the looks of it, this death has not occurred as a result of the inbreeding because if it had, that would be very difficult to come to terms with. All we can do now is wait and see and pray. In a way, it is similar to cot death with babies', however, I do not believe that a kitten just drops dead for no reason at all, despite what the pm showed. Onto our Detectives themselves though, first I want to talk about Sherlock..................................neither Graham or myself thought that Sherlock would still be here considering the fact that he was so far gone when we went into the kitten room and found him and Frost. Yet he has rallied around, and by late yesterday afternoon, he was eating from the little plate that the babies are fed from. I couldn't quite believe it. I do not know how he can go from near death, to being "normal" again in such a short space of time. Miss Marple had a bit of a mishap last night which was my fault entirely, well mine and Cashew's! I had Morse in my hands and had wrapped him in a towel to feed him, I reached over for the cup of mixture and the syringe, as I did so, Cashew dropped off my trouser pants, rolling onto my foot, and landing right where I was about to step, so in an attempt to avoid standing on him, I moved too quickly, knocked the milk mixture off the shelf, all over poor Miss Marple who was right below, having a meal from the plate. She most certainly did not appreciate having her meal ruined and being bathed in milk mixture. I then had to put Morse back down (he was screaming at me by this stage as he was hungry) and clean up Miss Marple. Throughout all of this, Cashew went merrily on his way, totally oblivious to the trouble he had caused. All of our Detectives are showing much more of an interest in eating from the little plate now which I am really pleased about. They are 23 days of age today and while I wouldn't normally be pushing them to wean so quickly, I think it has got to be done to take some of the pressure of Tia Lusso although I have to say she is coping extremely well looking after 8 babies although she does often get this "resigned" look in her eyes as she watches them tearing around the room and climbing on the little shelves.

Day 22 - July 30, 2007
Tragic News
At the time of writing this entry, I think we are still in shock. At 10:23pm last night, Frost dropped dead in our hands, right before our eyes, quite literally. I had gone into the kitten room at 10pm for another feed, and saw Frost, and Sherlock, both lying in the kitten box, very motionless, and extremely cold. I called Graham into the room, and he came straight in. We put the heat pad on, to try and warm both babies up, and both babies were given a drop of Star of Bethlehem. In our time of breeding, we have never seen anything like this in our lives. Frost had been perfectly fine, he was not one of the babies we had been syringe feeding, in fact, he was one of those braver ones who would eat from the saucer along with the Nuts. At the 8pm feed of Sherlock and Morse, Frost and Sherlock were both fine, although I felt Sherlock was a bit quieter than normal but at that point, Frost was still running about the kitten room with everyone else. His little life was over and gone within minutes and even now, I don't think that I can take it in, nor can I believe he has gone. I have never, ever, seen a baby who has been okay and then just die in our hands. It was a horrendous experience, it's been a very long night and will be an even longer day. I will be phoning our vets today, although as you know, they were flooded out, and at this point, they are not even open. Frost's body has been put in the fridge (one that is kept specifically for this purpose), on the off chance we can actually have a post mortem done because we need some answers. This morning, Sherlock was perfectly fine again, he's been feeding from the syringe, he was starving in fact bless him. He was also moving around the kitten room as per normal, but then, so was Frost the night before.
