Day 6 - July 14, 2007
Again today, there are no entries or photos because for the first time since Amarula's babies were born, we actually took some "time out" for ourselves and we went out to visit family during the afternoon. We were gone about 5 hours in total which is the longest we've been able to be away from the babies. It was nice to actually go out for a little while, and all the babies appeared to behave themselves during our absence. Tomorrow's diaries will resume as per normal with individual photos in each diary.

Day 5 - July 13, 2007
Our babies are doing very well which, as you can imagine, is a massive relief. They are actually doing so well now that I am no longer syringe feeding every 2 hours. I've been able to change the feeding to approximately every 4 hours now because all 5 babies are feeding of both mums without any problems. Although it was only Morse, Nancy Drew, and Sherlock that I was feeding. As you can imagine, due to a rocky start, there is no way on earth that our Detectives will have doubled their birth weight by the time they are a week old. In fact, most of them probably won't have even gained half of their birth weight. It was only today's weigh in that actually brought Morse up to just over his actual birth weight but considering the losses he had been making at the start, this is extremely promising. Lucy is doing a fantastic job of mothering her children. Like her own mother before her, she is a born mother and is happiest when she has little children to love and take care of. When you consider her children are a mere 5 days old, Lucy is looking absolutely wonderful, in excellent condition although as the Detectives mature and become more demanding, this may change slightly. On the whole, I am pleased with the progress of our Detectives, although (Yes here goes the voice of doom again) we still have a long way to go before I am going to be able to relax but all 5 kids are definitely going in the right direction, a couple of them are really going forward in leaps and bounds. When they turn 1 week of age, I will share their weights and week gain with you as that will give you an indication of just how dire the situation has been for the past 5 days.

Day 4 - July 12, 2007
Many apologies but there is no entry at all for today as it's just been manic here and I've not had a chance to get any entries online.

Day 3 - July 11, 2007
Houston...............we have lift off! Today, I am delighted to announce, nope, not delighted, over the moon and totally ecstatic, that our 3 babies whom I have been 2 hourly feeding are now gaining. The feeding is making such a huge difference to them now and it's such a tremendous relief because yesterday morning I was so worried we would lose Sherlock. Then early yesterday morning when Morse started losing weight I was incredibly worried. But now, it's a totally different story. Of course no one is out of the danger zone yet, but today's weigh in is extremely promising. The smallest gains in the last 24 hours was 7 grams, and the highest gain was 18 grams. What I have done differently with the Nuts and the Detectives when it comes to the feeding, is that I changed the mixture (on the advice of my mentor and best mate, Teen of Maroochydore Siamese and Orientals). Prior to these 2 litters, I would always have 400g of evaporated milk and 400g of boiled water, so equal quantities right (and also egg yolk and honey), but when I struggled with a previous fur child, I spoke with Teen and she had some great advice which was to reduce the amount of water by half. Now that's something I had never done up until then because I often felt that if it wasn't equal amounts then the babies would get upset tummies. Teen's theory was that perhaps the babies need more "energy" which would come from a mixture that was richer and wasn't so heavily diluted. I'm now using 400g of the milk and just 200g of the water and it does seem to be doing the trick. I am now hoping and praying that today's weights will continue. I used to have to fight Morse to get him to take in some milk from the syringe but he has gotten the hang of it now and will happily drink from the syringe. What is so adorably cute though is when Nancy Drew and Sherlock drink from the syringe because they wiggle their tiny little ears as they drink and it is so sweet to watch. As for photos, well don't hold your breath for anything spectacular because trying to keep the babies to their "own" litters for photos is just impossible and I still do not want to have them away from mum's for too long so I've not taken individual photos yet. So it's up to those of you who are reading this kitten diary, and the Nuts' kitten diary, to ascertain exactly which baby is which, and which head belongs to which body :)

Day 2 - July 10, 2007

There are no photos today sorry as we had a friend visit us and we also have an outside queen here to hopefully have a honeymoon with Ashanti so most of my day has been spent doing the syringe feeding, and spending time with the "bride to be" and Ashanti.

I am quite worried about little Sherlock because he just is not able to latch on properly. He starts off fighting quite hard for a nipple but then can't grasp exactly what it is he is supposed to do. So for the past 24 hours I've been trying to latch him on with little success and have had to resort to 2 hourly feeding him, but even with that and the Nutri Drops we're fighting a losing battle at the moment because with 2 hourly feeding, he should be gaining but he's actually losing weight. This does sometimes indicate something isn't quite right inside but I'm desperately hoping that is not the case and he is just a slow developer who needs a little encouragement and a bit of time before he starts to progress. So at the moment, I've been topping up Sherlock, Nancy Drew, and Morse. Frost and Miss Marple are gaining without any assistance from me. I am seeing a difference after I top up so I'm hoping that we will get there. It's going to be a long haul but hopefully a battle that we will win.

Day 1 - July 9, 2007

Before I do any entries, I must mentions photos. There are not many photos today and what we do have is rather awful. The reason for this is that we had a vet appointment at around midday for Ashanti to be blood tested as he is having a lady visit him soon and she is not one of our own ladies, and we also had to have Shelley, our dog vaccinated. As well as that we had to go to the tip and a few other places, all within the space of 2 hours so I could be back for the feeds. This morning, all I had time to do apart from the trays etc, put the washing on, cook the fish and roast chicken, then clean the upstairs part of the house, feed everyone, and it was time to go out. Then when we came back the first thing I had to do was go straight upstairs with food for the older litters and I had to syringe feed the baby people belong to Amarula and Tia Lusso. So it has been totally manic and it's actually a miracle that there are even diary entries for today, let alone photos.

We've not had a great start during the first 24 hours as 4 out of the 5 babies had losses whereas Miss Marple was the only baby who gained. So as soon as I weighed everyone, I then topped up all the babies, including the Nuts, and I then supplemented each of the Detectives with Nutri Drops. I don't want to get into the habit of feeding the Detectives every 2 hours because it's still very early days and it's so important that they latch on and feed from Lucy because the suckling action will help to get a better milk flow. During the first few days of babies' lives, the milk doesn't always flow fully until the babies are all feeding. So if I top them up every 2 hours, then they won't be hungry and will not seek out Lucy's nipples. Until the time when they are gaining, I will continue to use the Nutri Drops because this will keep them going until they are all feeding properly and until Lucy's milk is well and truly coming through. They are such precious little babies though and I would dearly love to take individual photos but at the moment Lucy is being an extremely protective mum and I'm only "allowed" to have the babies out of the box for the few seconds it takes to weigh them, and for the time it takes to supplement or feed them. If I have them out any longer than that, Lucy comes out of the box, leaves her other babies in mid feed and tries to take the baby from me. It's important that Lucy isn't stressed this early on because again, if a queen is stressed, that can also affect the milk flow. As it stands, I've not even had the opportunity to look closely at Frost yet to see whether or not he is a Classic or Spotted.

Birth - July 8, 2007

We tried something slightly different with this birth, not necessarily by choice either! Lusso started spending the evening's in the bedroom with us where her box was set up, as all of our girls do. But by the time Thursday evening had come around and again during some ridiculous hour of the morning Lucy chose to go to the toilet on the bed, I decided enough was enough. So she spent Friday night in the upstairs part of the home, on her own, and I had already made the decision that I would move her box into the 2nd kitten room (where Amarula and The Nuts currently are), to see if she would settle in there. I knew it was a slight risk in the respect that because her own babies hadn't been born, there may have been friction between her and Amarula, or perhaps Rula's babies would find a way into Lucy's box and annoy her. So I cleaned out the entire room, put Lucy's box in there, moved Lucy in. She settled in the box straight away, not really bothered by the cries of the Nuts, whereas Amarula was extremely curious about who her new room mate was. Once Amarula was satisfied this was a lady she had shared babies with before, she more than happy to go back to her own box and tend her children. Every half hour I went up to the kitten room to make sure labour had not started and to make sure all was well between the 2 ladies. At about midday, I went back upstairs, opened the door, peered into Lucy's box and my first thought was "It's started, we have babies". On closer inspection, the so called "babies" were none other than Pistachio and Pecan, being mothered by Lucy! I turned around and here was Amarula getting back out of her box with Macadamia in her mouth this time around, carting him into Lucy's box. I promptly removed the 3 babies, and couldn't believe that Lucy was growling at me as I was taking away the babies. Amarula was not particularly happy either about being dumped back in her box with her own babies. I then settled Lucy back down, explained that her children have not been born yet and she couldn't have other people's babies. I stayed in there for 5 minutes more, left the room, and I reckon that the "baby move" started again before I had even got to the bottom of the stairs. Rightly or wrongly, these 2 ladies wanted to be together, something we have never had happen prior to a queen going into labour, and as far as Lucy was concerned, the Nuts were hers just as much as they were Amarula's. After 5 more occasions of removing Amarula and the Nuts from Lucy's box, I just totally gave up. The odd thing was is that every time the Nuts cried, Lucy would put her face right next to them, groom, them and cuddle them, yet they still went back to their mum for milk, rather than Lucy. By the time Saturday afternoon had come around, Tia Lusso had gone right off her food, which is generally a good sign that labour would be within the next 24 hours. Another good sign was that she was resting herself quite a bit and the babies were kicking like footballers inside so they were obviously preparing themselves as well for what was about to happen. As for the labour itself, well it happened so incredibly quickly that there was no time to do anything, let alone take photos until right to the very end. Tia Lusso has done us proud, she is an excellent breeding queen, a superb mother, and you often hear breeders say "She shelled them like peas", well she did. Out they popped, one after another. While the babies were being born, Amarula and the Nuts were in the box the entire time, Lusso wanted Rula there for moral support and Amarula had not intentions of leaving the box. Tia Lusso did almost everything, she cleaned all the babies, she ate 3 of the placenta's, she did the cords for 3 babies, but not the other 2. Mess was minimal, it really was a textbook litter all the way through. There was a break between Number 4 and Number which allowed me time to make a coffee and come downstairs and grab the camera which I forgot to take up with me last night. The difficult thing was trying to keep Rula's Nut's away from Lusso as it's imperative that Lucy's babies drink only from Lucy for the first few days because they need the colostrum for their immune system. After baby number 4 had arrived I went downstairs to offer a prepare a plate of food for Lucy, and I did have to laugh when I took it up to the kitten room, put it in the box and Amarula pushed Lucy's head out of the way and started eating it herself. She seemed to think it had been she who had been doing all the hard work and not Lucy. Now I did make an attempt to sex these babies and there is a very high chance that I'm wrong however time will tell. This brings us to names I guess, well Graham has chosen a lovely theme for this litter, one he'd been wanting for a while, so please allow us to introduce you all to........................................................................The Detectives

After Frost was born, I came downstairs, made coffees, quickly checked emails, went back upstairs to collect the birth bedding, change all the litter trays, came back downstairs to put the chicken in the oven (for the cats, not us), put the mince on (again for the cats), made a start on this diary entry. It's now midday and Lucy is showing no signs at all of delivering any more children, but I am not convinced it is over just yet. We would be happy though if she were finished because we have 5 lovely new babies and that is more than enough so we will wait it out for the rest of the day and see what happens. Lucy is very content and very proud of her new children and she has that smug, contented look that all new mummies get. Keep an eye on this entry throughout the day because on the off chance Lucy does decide that labour isn't over yet, I will update this page with any news.
