Kitten Diaries
Sambuca
September 2005
Sambuca's 2nd Kitten Diary - September 2005 - December 2005
October 13, 2005 - Day 34
It would appear that our Berries now have a new sleeping place. When I went into the kitten room this morning to give Sambuca her breakfast and have some games and cuddles with the babies, I was surprised to see that they were not on their own bed. Instead, they were sound asleep on the lounge chair that resides in the kitten room. That poor chair has been through hell in the last few years because of our cats so we stuck it up in the kitten room out of the way as we had no room in the garage at the time. Anyway, the Berries have decided that it is their new bed and they seem perfectly happy up there. Having spent some time watching them during these last few days, I know that they definitely have to come downstairs to live next week at some point. This will mean a whole lot of moving about because I do not want them mixing with any of our other babies at all for the time being. Not that I really think there would be any problems, but after what we went through when the Berries were born, I'm still being incredibly over protective of them. They have definitely had enough of being confined though so I think I will probably set aside Monday to move babies around and to give them a new home downstairs.

October 12, 2005 - Day 33
In case anyone is confused and thinking that Blackberry has changed sex rather rapidly, let me assure you that isn't the case. Having been told by Jason & Mandi that I had referred to Blackberry as a male in the kitten diary, when I went back and checked, sure enough I had! Blackberry is most definitely a girl, always has been, and always will be. I think the problem is that I have 3 black babies downstairs who are all male and whenever I think of black kittens at the moment, I just automatically think of males and not females. So now I'm going to try really hard and actually think before typing and hopefully I'll get it right from here on in :) I have come to the conclusion that out of the 2 Berries, Loganberry is the little poser whereas Blackberry is more interested in people than looking pretty for the camera. When I go into the room to take photos, the babies come running straight over to me as per usual. I always pick them up and put them back on the bed to try and take a few shots. Loganberry remains where I place her, looking beautiful, but Blackberry, just comes running straight back over to me before I get the chance to take a photo. She is more interested in climbing my legs and being cuddled than having her photo taken. I am so incredibly proud of our Berries because last night, when I was went into the kitten room to give Sambuca her dinner, I was amazed to see that both Berries were in the "grown up" litter tray! For the past week, the small tray has been on the floor but there had been no evidence of it being used which confused me but now I know why. They obviously feel they are grown up enough to use "mum's" tray and have no need for the babyish tray. They are such precious little gems who are, without a doubt, the cleverest babies I have bred :)

October 11, 2005 - Day 32
Blackberry is going to be happy on Saturday as her new family, Jason & Mandi, will be visiting for the first time which will be lovely for her. I told her about it today and she's really looking forward to it. The size of our Berries really does amaze me at times, especially when I compare them with the Chocolate Bars and the T's although obviously, lots of factors need to be taken into account. I think at some point next week I will have to look at evicting our downstairs babies from the back room permanently so that I can move the Berries in there as they definitely want much more freedom than they currently have.

October 10, 2005 - Day 31

There's not really much of an entry at all today and the 4 photos are the same in each entry. As we were out all day yesterday, today has been spent trying to integrate Toussaint into the household and trying to catch up with everything that I am now so far behind on.

Blackberry is the first of our Berries to use the food and water bowls. She has been drinking from the water bowl now for the last 2 days and then last night, I saw her nibble at the dry kitten biscuits which is great because so far, I've not even attempted to wean the babies yet. Their weight gains are fantastic. Loganberry already weighs just over 500 grams and I really don't see any need to rush them into weaning when they are obviously doing really well on mum's milk.

October 9, 2005 - Day 30

Today's entries are almost all the same and are extremely short with no photos. The reason for this is that Graham and I left at 4am this morning to drive to Cheshire to pick up our fabulous new Oriental Black Tortie breeding girl. As it has been such a long journey and the remainder of my day needs to be spent with bonding with our new girl, and making sure she is not stressed or unhappy. It is so very different for me to be on the "other side of things" and bringing home a new girl myself. All the advice and common sense that I'm forever telling our own new owners has quite literally gone from my mind.

Our Berries didn't mind that their human mum wasn't around for quite a while today and as we left so early in the morning, they didn't really miss out on a great deal as we arrived back home shortly after lunch. They did make a big fuss over me though when I went in to visit them and they were extremely demanding in their usual way. Both Berries are so incredibly vocal, much more so than any of our other litters (at least that I can remember).

October 8, 2005 - Day 29
Just like our other diary entries for today, it really is quite a rushed affair due to lack of time so it's an incredibly short entry today. As per usual, our Berries weights are wonderful and both babies now weigh over 450 grams which I'm delighted with. I had some wonderful cuddles with both Berries today. They are happiest when I am sitting on the floor with them, giving them lots of strokes and ear tickles while they sit on my lap. It is getting slightly more difficult now to take photos of our Berries because as soon as I open the door to the kitten room, they both come running straight over to me, expecting to be cuddled and as I'm trying to take photos, they are running towards me. What I have to do is wait till they get as close as possible to me, then I run straight over to the other side of the room, try and take a photo and hope they haven't run back towards me.

October 7, 2005 - Day 28 - 4 weeks old today!
I'm pleased with the way our Berries are progressing and they're doing everything that the should be at this stage of their lives. Weight gains are still really good and both Berries seem to be growing at a rather alarming rate. They are very interested in everything that is going on around them and each time I enter the room, they still come running over to me and want to know what I'm doing. Sambuca is very patient with them and when she's eating her meals, she doesn't mind when the babies walk under her or through her dinner, she just gives them a quick lick and carries on with eating. The Berries are getting more interested now in the food that their mum is eating because at each meal time, they come sniffing around the plate and putting their faces in it so I may look at starting to wean them next week.
