Kitten Diaries
Sambuca
September 2005
Sambuca's 2nd Kitten Diary - September 2005 - December 2005
September 29, 2005 - Day 20
As per usual (thank goodness) both our Berries are doing remarkably well and are becoming more alert and active as each day passes. When I look back over the last few weeks, I just think it is an absolute blessing that our 2 Berries are still here and are doing just fine. This morning, Loganberry was in the process of walking off the bed and onto the floor when Sambuca spotted what she was doing and came running over to herd her back onto the bed, right at the back. Blackberry is much less pushy than Loganberry (at this stage) because Blackberry will not walk all over Loganberry, or stand on her, instead, Blackberry will walk around Loganberry. So obviously one Berry has far better manners than the other.

September 28, 2005 - Day 19
I had to smile at Loganberry this morning as she was sitting up in bed, scratching her ear with her back paw as most cats do. However, as the babies are still at the stage where they are learning to use their limbs properly and come to grips with balance issues, she leant over too far and fell over, ending up in a rather undignified looking position. She then rolled back over onto her tummy and looked up at me as if to say "What happened?" Sambuca is still being wonderful with them and every time she was away from the bed, i.e. eating, spending time with me etc. when either of the Berries make a noise, she runs straight over to them, starts to feed them and grooms them all over which is great to see.

September 27, 2005 - Day 18
Another great 24 hours for our Berries with wonderful weight gains so they are coming along quite nicely now. They have even started to play little kitten games which is so very sweet. I caught them in the middle of one of their first ever wrestling matches yesterday afternoon. Loganberry had Blackberry pinned to the ground and she was chewing on Blackberry's ear (no she definitely was not grooming her) and Blackberry in the meantime kept trying to push Loganberry off, rather unsuccessfully I might add. I just love this stage of the babies' lives where they are learning all these wonderful new experiences.

September 26, 2005 - Day 17
Yet again more wonderful weight gains. Loganberry gained 24 grams & Blackberry gained 21 grams which is great. They are only 17 days old and already weigh over 300 grams. As you can see by the photos below, both babies are coming along really well and they are absolute sweethearts. The Berries have not yet met any other humans in the house other than myself as no one is allowed to enter the kitten room or touch them other than me. I am probably being over cautious however I am not prepared to take any chances with these babies. In actual fact, I don't think Graham has even seen them since the day they were born! So far it seems as if Loganberry will be "thinker" and Blackberry will be the "doer". Whenever I'm in the room and having cuddles with Sambuca, Loganberry will sit on the bed and watch me interacting with her mum with her eyes following every movement and her ears twitching as she listens intently to the sound of my voice, and her mum's purrs. I think this is helpful for socialisation purpose because if the babies see that Sambuca purring away while I stroke her, they will know that I am a "friend" and not just the evil hag who keeps putting them on scales or upsetting their sleep when I change the bedding.

September 25, 2005 - Day 16
There are no photos today due to lack of time but I will make sure I take some tomorrow. The Berries are doing really well and last night, Blackberry had gained 10 grams and Loganberry had gained 11 grams so I'm thrilled to bits. They are both such lovely little babies and already are starting to move off the bed and onto the floor, much to Sambuca's disgust as she likes to keep the babies with her constantly. Whenever she thinks they are moving somewhere they shouldn't, she picks them up, plonks them at the back end of the bed and starts grooming them all over. So far this method is working but I can guarantee that in a week's time she will have her hands full trying to keep them on the bed.

September 24, 2005 - Day 15
Loganberry now grooms herself. I was in the kitten room yesterday afternoon having a chat with the babies and giving Sambuca another meal and while I was talking to the Berries, Loganberry was grooming her back paw which was so very sweet. Then later on this morning, Blackberry was grooming Loganberry's ear so both babies are progressing really well now. Again more huge gains last night and the best news of the day is that Loganberry has had her first purr which is wonderful. I really love it when the babies are purring at this age. I think out of the 2 Berries that Blackberry may end up being quite a chatty baby. I may have to move the black show suitcase from behind the Berries' bed because I notice in the photos that when Blackberry is at the back of the bed, the poor baby blends in with the suitcase.

September 23, 2005 - 2 weeks old today!
This week has simply flown by and I am just so very grateful that Loganberry and Blackberry are still with us and are doing so well. Yet again weight gains in the last 24 hours have been really wonderful and at the moment, I'm thrilled with the way our 2 babies are developing. Neither of them were particularly impressed when I changed their bedding this morning, particularly Loganberry who then had to crawl all over the bed, sniffing it to make sure that is where she belonged which I thought was really cute. The problem with the babies at this age of their lives is that sometimes it's very difficult to think of what to write about because they do just drink and sleep. I think though that by the time we approach the beginning of week 3, they will be starting to move around off their bed.
