Kitten Diaries
Sambuca
September 2005
Sambuca's 2nd Kitten Diary - September 2005 - December 2005
September 22, 2005 - Day 13
More massive weight gains last night for our Berries which is really pleasing. Loganberry gained 25 grams in 24 hours and Blackberry gained 32 grams in 24 hours. I must admit that even I was rather astonished at these gains and it's no wonder that the Berries are the fattest babies I have ever seen in my life! Sambuca's being a really good mum and is spending all of her time with the babies feeding them, and grooming them. For the time being, she has stopped moving the babies around for which I'm grateful. She seems happy with their current bed which is a small space inbetween the ottoman and a lounge chair. Many thanks to Cynthia and Graham for pointing out to me that this diary stated Sambuca's 1st Kitten Diary which I've now changed.

September 21, 2005 - Day 12
Again, more very good weight gains as each baby had gained 16 grams in 24 hours when I weighed them last night. I have decided that the babies now really should have names. Before everything started to go wrong, Graham had plans to name the babies after the English cricket team, much to my disgust! However, with only 2 babies remaining, it was rather pointless. They now have, what I think are perfect names and these names came about from an email I had sent to me. My very good friend and co-moderator of my Siamese Cat Chat message board, Maureen, had sent me an email with regards to Sami and her babies but Maureen had inadvertently called the Black babies, Black Berries by mistake. This really amused me at the time, particularly as I had very little to smile about back then and the name "Berries" had stuck in my mind ever since that email. I said to Graham last night that they need names and that I wanted to call them Blackberry (the Black) and Loganberry (the Seal Point) and that is what they have now become. Obviously, they will be collectively known as The Berries. The photos aren't great at all but they will do for now.

September 20, 2005 - Day 11
After I lost the 3rd of Sambuca's babies, I truly didn't see the point of even continuing with this diary as it was quite literally a case of waking up each day and see how many were left and I truly did not expect any of Sami's babies to survive after losing the first 3. Yet, I was stunned when I weighed the remaining 2 babies on the evening of the 10th to discover that our Black baby had gained 70 grams in 5 days and our Siamese baby had gained 53 grams in 5 days. Then 12 hours later, first thing this morning, I weighed them again and , they had both gained another 6 grams overnight. It was actually these gains that gave me just the smallest glimmer of hope that maybe our remaining 2 would pull through. The hardest thing for me, apart from losing the babies, is trying not to get attached to our remaining two because if they do leave me for Rainbow Bridge, then it will just be unbearable. However, any breeder who loves their babies knows that it's impossible not to get attached to them, particularly the ones that you are fighting so darn hard to pull through and keep with you. These two are certainly no exception. I spent some lovely time with them in the kitten room this morning, just talking to them and stroking them behind their ears which they really love. They have the most darling little eyes and our Siamese baby is very alert because every time I speak to the babies, his/her little ears wiggle back and forth and he looks at me as if he is concentrating really hard on what I am saying.

We lost a 3rd baby in the litter today.

September 17, 2005 - Day 8
I'm now going to be stopping this diary for the time being. One of our babies is looking very poorly and I do not think he or she will be with us much longer which will leave us with just 2 of Sambuca's babies. Depending on what happens, the diary will either be closed off altogether, or perhaps re-started next week.
September 16, 2005 - 1 week old today!

Well this is the start of a brand new week and the fact that these 3 babies are still with us amazes me quite frankly. Yet all 3 are definitely holding their own. Sambuca was a bit of a nightmare yesterday in the fact that she constantly moved the babies around the room. Each time I went into the kitten room, they were in different places. I think the last straw was at about midnight last night when I went in to check on them, one Black baby was on the bed which was the correct place, Sambuca had put the other black baby underneath the sofa bed on the cold floor whilst the Siamese baby ended up in a cat carrier where she'd obviously put him/her. Fortunately, all day today..............so far.............she has kept all 3 babies on the bed with her which I'm extremely relieved about. We are going to see how things are going at the end of the weekend and if our babies appear to still be doing okay, we will actually give them names which we have been putting off doing.
