Day 6 - April 28, 2007
There is no entry for today as I was showing Nocello at the Bedford & District Cat Club show.

Day 5 - April 27, 2007
This is an extremely short entry as we have a manic weekend planned and I have quite a lot to get through. Yet again there are more incredibly bad photos of Liquorice <sigh>. He is such a beautiful little boy but do you think I can manage to get a decent photo of him? Cointreau doesn't help matters because she insists on putting her arms around him each time I try to take a photo. Liquorice made quite adequate gains again during the past 24 hours which I'm pleased about. I have to say though, I don't think he will double his birth weight by Day 7, but we will see. Cointreau is being a superb mum and she totally loves him to bits. If she is out of the box, the moment he cries, she runs straight in, sits as close to him as possible and curls her body around him to comfort him. Admittedly, she has got a bit too close once or twice and has sat on top of the poor little guy.

Day 4 - April 26, 2007
If you think today's photos are bad, you should have seen the ones I didn't publish online! I have always found it incredibly difficult trying to photograph our black fur children and Liquorice is no exception. Once Cointreau is happier with me removing him from the box (she is getting better though), I will take him out for photo sessions as it might make a difference. In the last 24 hours, he gained 15 grams which again, is a gain that I am extremely happy with. We're up to Day 4 now and so far, all is progressing quite well for our little man, however, under no circumstances are all will I become complacent just because he is doing well. He is being monitored on an hourly basis throughout the day at the moment. I make sure I go into the kitten room every hour to have visits with him because the more I chat with him, and handle him, even from this very young age, the more socialised and confident he will be as he matures.

Day 3 - April 25, 2007

Before I start today's entry, I just wanted to mention something because I know that sometimes other novice breeders read the kitten diaries and I often feel that every bit of information I can include is so helpful, not only for myself, but also for anyone else who may be a novice breeder. If you read Cointreau's pregnancy diary you will know one of the things I was concerned about was lack of movement, then I was also concerned at how overdue Cointreau was prior to giving birth. Well, every breeder needs a mentor, and even if you've been breeding 20 years, I still believe that there is always something new to learn, and I had rung Teen & Tone (Maroochydore Siamese & Orientals) to discuss the fact that Cointreau hadn't gone into labour and that I'd seen very little movement. One thing that both Teen and Tone told me which I didn't realise, was that yes, some babies can just be lazy and unless you're watching your queen 24/7, the baby may be kicking at times when you are not watching. Also, when babies are in the birth process, they generally push against each other as a way of assisting them down the birth canal. Now one baby on his own may take longer as he has very little to push against. Things I had never considered naturally, and this is why it is imperative for all breeders to have a support network they can rely on. Now onto our boy himself, well, I may be bias, who knows, but isn't Liquorice just the most stunning little baby ever born????????????????? And isn't he the most "cleverest" as his eyes are already virtually open at just 3 days of age :) In the last 24 hours he gained 16 grams which is much more like the weights I have been hoping for as a single child so Cointreau's milk must be well and truly flowing through now. Already, I have been comparing photos of Liquorice, and his dad at the same age, to try and ascertain just how nice this baby is going to be :) But whatever his future holds, Liquorice will be in a home where he is cherished for life just for being the special little guy that he is. Not that he's looking particularly little as already he is showing signs of having his fathers' body length which is quite nice :) Already, Liquorice is getting used to me and he is such a time waster! It is no trouble at all to lie down in front of the box, chatting to him and singing to him for ages and then I realise than an hour has gone by and I should be doing things. It's not because he is a "singleton" that is so special, (and he won't be single for long as Sami is due in 7 days' time and will be moving into the kitten room with her daughter and Liquorice), but he is special because he is an Ashanti child :)

Day 2 - April 24, 2007
Yesterday's visit to the vets concluded that there are definitely no more babies so now we can just relax and let Cointreau get on with being a mummy which is quite a bit relief. Liquorice had quite a good 24 hours and he gained 6 grams, which did surprise me because Cointreau was so incredibly stressed out during the short trip to the vets and remained stressed for quite some time after returning home, so it's a miracle that Liquorice gained anything at all. I did manage to get some photos of him on his own this morning while he was in the kitten box because Cointreau was busy eating so while her attention was diverted I was able to stick the lens through the opening and gets some photos. They aren't great piccies but at least you can get an idea of what Liquorice actually looks like :) At 2 days of age, I'm starting to see evidence of tiny little eyes opening up which is really quite sweet. Cointreau still goes nutty when I remove him from the box to weigh or examine here so as a result, most of my contact with Liquorice at the moment is lying down on the floor in front of the box and stroking him and chatting to him while he is in the box which Cointreau is happy for me to do.

Day 1 - April 23, 2007
Liquorice seems to have had a very good night and in the past 24 hours he gained 4 grams which I'm really pleased with. I know it is not a big gain, but any gain is always good and I am positive that as he gets a bit stronger and realises he has the entire milk bar to himself, he will start making much more substantial gains. He is a happy little baby and already is showing signs of being demanding little baby. When he's trying to feed, if he doesn't manage to latch on straight away, he screams at his mother and screws his face up with such determination to try and find the milk. Both he, and Cointreau, will be visiting the vets at 1500 today just so they can have a feel of Cointreau and also confirm that there are definitely no more babies. Cointreau is being very protective of Liquorice and while she's happy for me to stroke him in the box, she gets extremely irate and panics if I remove him for weighing, or to have little cuddles with him. I remember with the Burps, her first litter, she was very overprotective and to the point where it was incredibly difficult for the kitten families to handle her children whenever they visited so it will be interesting to see whether or not she will do the same thing with Liquorice.

Birth - April 22, 2007

Cointreau really had us guessing with this one, and I have to say, that up until April 19, I was getting quite concerned because we had seen no movement whatsoever. Her due date should have been the 17th, so on the 18th, when I still couldn't see any movement, I was thinking that perhaps there were no live babies at all. At this stage we should have been seeing lots of kicking and we certainly should have been able to feel babies moving around. On the evening of the 19th, I noticed quite a lot of movement, but instead of the movement coming from both sides, it was coming from from just one side, and the movement was way down underneath. It's a bit hard to explain but normally, you would see the babies moving around about half way down each side of the queen and this is the first time I've ever seen babies who are so incredibly low down, almost sitting directly on the bottom of her abdomen as opposed to being higher up. As you can imagine though, the fact that I was suddenly seeing a lot of movement did make me incredibly relieved. For nights now, Cointreau has been keeping us awake which is okay as you expect that in the week coming up to the birth, but she was showing no signs at all of going into labour. She was just content to spend her evenings with us and chill out. I know we aren't the only ones who were becoming impatient though as Jill, the Blue Paw Clan, and Teen were in touch quite regularly to see if "anything had happened yet". I also had Julie asking via email but then I think she has an ulterior motive in that her lovely Suki may be having a honeymoon with Ashanti later this year, so I secretly think Julie is just desperate to know just what he is capable of producing :) It was at the point where Caryll was giving me advice on what to do, and that went along the lines of "Lift her tail and shout very loudly come out, you buggers!" Okay, I'll admit that I did do exactly what Caryll said and did it make any difference,.....................................of course it didn't :) By the time Saturday afternoon came around, I said to Graham she's got until Monday and if nothing has happened by then, she'll be taken straight to our vets for a scan and then a decision would be made but I was of the opinion that as she had gone overdue by quite a few days that there would be nothing live in there but throughout it all, Cointreau was perfectly fine in herself, eyes were bright and clear, coat was smooth and soft and she was eating well and had normal toileting habits. Now all of this is a prelude to what happened during Sunday morning but I'll start with Saturday night. First of all, we were both already tired as we had been moving things around all day so we decided to have an early night because prior to this, Cointreau had been keeping us awake, night after night, being very restless and incredibly noisy. She then chose Saturday night to howl on and off all night long, and despite us both checking her constantly, she was perfectly fine, not in any distress, it was more as if she was in a state of confusion. When Sunday morning came around, we both slept in as we were shattered. Graham was up at quarter to eight, and when he got up, Cointreau was fine, still wandering around and still howling. I then wok up at quarter to nine, and again it was the same. No evidence of anything at all and Cointreau was still incredibly restless. I came downstairs, made a coffee, did a few minor bits and pieces, went back upstairs to collect the washing and check Cointreau again and when I was in the bedroom, I heard the unmistakable sounds of a tiny baby squeaking. I checked the box, no Cointreau, no baby, I checked under the bed, no Cointreau and no baby, I checked Graham's clothes shelves in the wardrobe, no Cointreau and no baby. I called out (well okay screamed out to Graham) to come upstairs and I took the box out of the wardrobe and in between the box and Graham's shelves, sure enough, there was Cointreau and an Oriental Black baby!!! I ran into the kitten room, grabbed loads of bedding, put it on the floor in the wardrobe, placed Cointreau on the bedding, picked up baby for inspection and weighing, baby was perfectly dry, and perfectly fine, and perfectly beautiful. I then placed baby back with Cointreau who proceeded to snuggle him in close to her and all was well. I then came downstairs to put another load of washing on, and to make a coffee and as I was washing up, I realised with horror that the bedding I had put Cointreau and baby on was fluffy bedding and I stood there at the sink totally petrified the long fur on the bedding would choke baby so I flew up the stairs and changed the bedding all over again, in a total panic and Teen got quite a giggle out of this when I told her on the phone. Throughout the day I waited and waited to see if there were any more, but by 3pm it did appear that was it, just the one. I very quickly evicted the Racers from the kitten room, did some quick reshuffling of items, put the box into the kitten room and put in fresh bedding and then put Cointreau and baby in there. Cointreau settled in the box straight away with her baby, whom already she adores and since then, I have been going up to check on her every half hour and all is well and baby is feeding and doing just fine. So we would like to introduce you to Liquorice, whose birth details are below................

Now if you were to ask me am I disappointed that we didn't get a miniature Ashanti, or that there is only one baby, well if I were being perfectly honest, I would say no. In fact, I am just over the moon that Liquorice was an excellent weight, and that Cointreau is fine. As mentioned, I had been thinking the worst because today she would have been approximately 5 days overdue and with very little movement, I was anticipating an urgent trip to the vets tomorrow, so no, I am totally and utterly delighted with the appearance of Liquorice. Ashanti was only 6 1/2 months old when he sired Liquorice and we are thrilled that he has successfully sired his first "litter" now. Okay, litter being just one baby of course, but one baby with fantastic weight and beautifully formed, is a very good start to Ashanti's "stud" career and we are extremely proud of both him, and Cointreau.
