Kitten Diaries
Cointreau
August 2006
Cointreau's 1st Kitten Diary - August 2006 to November 2006
Day 13 - September 8, 2006
Cointreau and the Burps had a total change of scenery today which Cointreau accepted far better than I thought she would. Our Burps had some of their new kitten families visiting them today so they were brought downstairs, in their box, along with Cointreau, litter tray/food/water etc. As you are all aware, they have been currently living in our bedroom and the thought of trying to stuff kitten visitors in our bedroom to view their children, who live in our wardrobe, is not really an ideal situation. Knowing how protective Cointreau is over her babies, I did wonder if she would be stressed with the temporary move but once she realised her babies were all there with her, she was perfectly happy. The first of our visitors to arrive today was, Dawn, Larry and Duncan (I do hope it is Larry and not Barry, or indeed Gary?). It was really lovely to meet them for the first time and to show off the Burps to them. We did have to remove Cointreau from the room while we had some cuddles with her babies as she is very protective of them at this early stage. This is only natural because she is a first time mum and is to be expected. Over time, when the Burps are a little older, she will become more accustomed to people handling her children. She really is a superb mum. I was particularly impressed with the way Duncan was with the babies, as well as our adult cats. The one things we breeders hate more than anything is when children visit us and handle our cats roughly and don't behave (although of course these types of children are very quickly showed the front door, along with their parents!). Duncan was wonderful, such a polite, respectful young man who was so incredibly gentle with the babies. He is a credit to his parents :) Then later on this afternoon, we had a visit from Jayne, Ella, and Jayne's husband, whom I must apologise to as I have totally forgotten his name and feel rather awful about that. I remember the names of cats and kittens, even the names of other people's fur children, but when it comes to humans and their names, I have a brain like a sieve! It was really lovely to see them all again and Ella was very excited about her 2 new babies, Sprite and Coke and we were able to leave Cointreau in the same room while we all held the Burps. After a couple of minutes, she did want her babies back which is normal, but at least she was okay with us holding them, one at a time so I'm really pleased. Just like Duncan earlier, Ella was wonderful with the babies (as well as our adult cats), and I am incredibly impressed, and she even had some questions for me of her own, which again, is something that impresses me greatly. In today's world, to have 2 beautifully behaved children in the same day, who respect young kittens is a bit of a miracle really and I have no doubts at all that our Burps will be in homes where they are incredibly loved and cared for. Ella has already chosen her babies' names, and they are lovely names. I do believe both of her new babies are boys, in fact, I believe all 4 of our Burps are male, but of course, they are extremely young, and there is always the possibility, that they will "change sex" in a week or two.

Day 12 - September 8, 2006
Unfortunately today there are no photos at all as I've just not had the time to take any. It's been a rather hectic day and I also had to update Drambuie's Pregnancy Diary, and Toussaint's Pregnancy Diary, both of which were supposed to be updated yesterday but lack of time prevented this. Our babies are still doing very well and I am still convinced that we have 3 Chocolate Points which is definitely possible. Seal and Chocolate are both dominant colours, and Sheridans (the Burp's dad) is a Chocolate out of a Chocolate mum and a Chocolate dad, where as Cointreau's grandfather is a Havana (Chocolate), and her mother is a Chocolate carrier. So when I think about it, to have more Chocolates than Seals is actually no great surprise. Mind you, neither Cointreau, nor the Burps really care what colour they are. At this stage, they are much more concerned with trying to make their limbs take them to where they want to go, albeit not extremely successfully just yet. They are rather funny when they try to walk because they focus directly on the point where they want to be, however sometimes, their limbs seem to have other ideas and suddenly the babies are toddling off in a totally different direction. I think when they are old enough to start running around and creating havoc, Cointreau is going to have a fight on her hands if she wants to try and keep them contained.

Day 11 - September 7, 2006
I am delighted to say that the permanent marker has definitely vanished from Fanta's head now which is a relief and I shall definitely be much more careful when marking the babies in the future. It will be nice when they are old enough to have more distinguished features when it will be much easier to tell them apart. At the moment the only one that really stands out is Coke because of his Seal colouring, although sometimes I can recognise Pepsi straight away as he/she has a slightly different head shape to Sprite and Fanta. The Burps were really funny last night because I was lying in bed and I could see straight into the box and the babies were all at the front of the box, peering over the edge, and I just know that they were trying to figure out how they get from inside the box to outside of the box. I think I will give it another day or two and then I will put some bedding on the floor in front of the box on the off chance someone does tumble out because at least then, hopefully, they'll be able to get back in. Their weights were very good again and all four of our Burps are doing extremely well.

Day 10 - September 6, 2006

Today I managed to take individual photos of the babies again, although to be honest, you probably won't see a huge difference between the photos last week, and the ones today with regards to changes in the babies. I must admit that I am severely lacking motivation to write an entry, mainly because I took our daughter to college this morning, then Graham and I had to go out, and of course there are still the normal household duties to contend with. Our Burps had very good weights again this morning which is pleasing and I did mean to try and have a look at sexes today but still have not got around to it. One thing I've noticed though which is becoming more and more apparent, is the colours and it appears we have more Chocolate Points than Seal Points which is a bit of a surprise. There is a good chance I may not be accurate with the colours but as it stands at the moment, I believe that our babies are the following:

Baby
Colour
Fanta
Chocolate Point Siamese
Sprite
Chocolate Point Siamese
Pepsi
Chocolate Point Siamese
Coke
Seal Point Siamese

The reason I think this is because I compared today's photos and Fanta, Sprite and Pepsi just do not have the ear colouring that they should have for a Seal Point. I also feel there is quite a difference between Coke's tail colouring and the other three babies and Coke is a definite Seal Point. It's going to be rather interesting to see how they develop over the next few weeks to see whether or not my first guesses were right. Also, Coke's nose leather appears to be a different shade than the other babies as well. Oh, and before I forget, yesterday I made a mistake regarding the baby with the blue head (the mark has almost faded now thank goodness), the baby was not Sprite as I originally thought, but was in fact, Fanta.

Day 9 - September 5, 2006
I have done something very bad :( Last night, I was re-marking the Burps with blue permanent marker (permanent my bum!) and I accidentally have given Sprite a blue head now :( Fortunately, I know the marker will wear off fairly quickly as it always does. It happened because Sprite was wriggling so much while I was trying to mark him/her. Oh well, if nothing else, it will be easier to tell Sprite apart from everyone else at the moment :) Weights again were extremely good and the babies are now becoming even more active, as you can see by the photos below where they are trying to stand up and are also trying to get out of the box. Our Burps will be having some visitors this weekend, in the form of their new families and it will be very interesting to see how Cointreau reacts "strangers" looking at her children.

Day 8 - September 4, 2006
Yet again our Burps' weights were marvellous when I weighed them this morning and I am still really delighted with their progress so far. They are such wonderful babies and some of them are becoming more used to being handled which is really great. Cointreau, on the other hand, still only allows me to handle her babies for a certain amount of time and if she feels I have had them for too long, she tries to remove them either from my hands, or from the weighing scales. Unfortunately though, they are at that stage now where it is difficult to know what to write in their diary entry because they entire life consists of nothing more than sleeping, feeding from mum and attempting to crawl over each other to try to find the best nipple on the milk bar.

Day 7 - September 3, 2006

I must say today a "thank you" to Gemma who took the time to email me and let me know that I had put yesterday's date down as September 1st also (no there is no point going to look as I've amended it now). I wonder how many of the rest of you reading this diary actually noticed :) To give you an idea of how our Burps are progressing, I have put their weights below for the "one week" stage of their lives. Graham and I were saying last night that we just couldn't believe that they are already a week old because it seems like only yesterday that they were born.

Baby
Birth Weight
1 week Weight
Coke
114 grams
225 grams
Pepsi
106 grams
221 grams
Fanta
120 grams
220 grams
Sprite
101 grams
211 grams

So as you can tell by the weights, our Burps are certainly holding their own and Cointreau appears to have plenty of milk to go around. As of yet, I have still not even looked at the sexes, mainly because I do know that it's going to be so incredibly difficult to tell but I really must try to make the effort to do that very soon. Now that they are a week old, they are becoming more active now in the respect that they are moving around the kitten box an awful lot more and they are also becoming much louder. When we are sleeping of an evening, we are being woken by little squeaks coming from the kitten box.
