Cacao's 2nd Kitten Diary - June 2004 to October 2004
Day 34 - July 22, 2004
Well the Potters have finally been introduced to the upstairs hallway and I really should have done it a few days ago, particularly as we will be having 2 furry friends coming to stay tomorrow for a fortnight and the Potters will actually be kicked out of the kitten room. They've been having a lot of fun with the hallway and have been exploring absolutely everywhere. I did have problems with the stairs though. I heard Cacao making some odd noises and ran upstairs only to find that the Potters had moved the barrier and were all sitting on the top step trying to get back up but weren't able to because they just aren't quite big enough for stairs yet. It's incredibly difficult trying to find something to use as a barrier that isn't too obstructive. The Potters wouldn't eat their 2nd meal today because they were far more interested in exploring the new surroundings than their food but fortunately, by the time their 3rd meal came around, they were more than ready for it. Truly I do not know where this litter gets their energy from.
Day 33 - July 21, 2004
The Potters are coming along in leaps and bounds now. The one thing that amazes me is that they manage to keep the Kitten Room so tidy in comparison with the other litters we have had. It's rather surprising as Cacao can be an extremely messy cat herself so possibly she has decided to teach the Potters to be much tidier than she is. All 5 babies are very attention seeking and you simply are not allowed to go into the kitten room without spending lots of time sitting on the floor and talking to them and letting them climb all over you. Their favourite games are chasing each other and zooming around under the chair and sofa to see who can get to their destination first. I don't think they sleep as much as our other litters either because every time I go into the kitten room, the Potters are all awake and are playing and they certainly have loads of energy.
Day 32 - July 20, 2004
A very happy day indeed for the Potters and for me. At long last, my dear Ron Weasley has now figured out what to do in regards to food on the saucer. It's taken over a week but last night with much perseverance from me, he will now eat straight from the saucer with the rest of his litter mates and I'm so very proud of him. It took a while but he got there in the end. I'm wondering if the reason is that yesterday when I made up the kitten mixture, I added some natural yoghurt to it and it's quite possible that he prefers the mixture with yoghurt. It really is a relief to say the least. You'll be happy to see that I finally managed to get some photos in today's entry. All the babies are really doing very well and they all love their food a great deal. Even though I still haven't seen any of the babies in the litter tray, some of them are definitely using the small tray (the kitten room has 2 trays in there), and it's not Cacao that uses the small tray as she has a large hooded tray and tends to scatter litter everywhere. One thing the Potters are not doing yet is playing in the litter tray which is surprising as the other litters we have had all go through a spell where they play in the tray and think the litter is there as part of a game. They all still climb my legs and Hermione and McGonagall now manage to climb up the back of my legs and climb right up to my shoulder which can cause the occasional problem as it's very difficult to remove them from there.

Day 31 - July 19, 2004
I've now updated the missing entries for the weekend, however they are fairly short entries due to everything being so hectic. Our little ones now use the litter tray, I've seen 3 of them drinking water from the bowl and a couple of them have shown an interest in the dry food so their progress has been absolutely wonderful. They really are sick of being confined to one room now, whereas the R's were happy with their room for the first 5 weeks or so, the Potters are totally different. They have this need to explore everything and seem to want to know everything and they are clever enough to realise that there is more to life than one room which is why whenever I leave the kitten room, the babies are right on my heels trying to get out the door with me. I will be giving them access to the hallway this week, probably tomorrow and that should satisfy their curiosity for a short while I hope.

Day 30 - July 18, 2004
Such an incredibly hectic day as I'm still trying to get sorted out after being out all day yesterday. Ron still isn't fussed on eating proper food yet, but he will stick lick some off my fingers. I'm hoping that if I change the meal slightly, he may show more interest in it. Everyone else will now go straight to the saucer with no encouragement at all which is great to see. Their weight gains are still quite good and the babies are so incredibly active now. They are able to climb all over everything in the kitten room and they still have this habit of climbing up my legs and then swinging off my trousers as I walk around the room.

Day 29 - July 17, 2004
Just like the R's entry, there is very little to tell you as I wasn't around for most of the day. The Potters were left in hubby's care in my absence but they all coped very well without me. I'm happy though that there were squeals of delight from the babies when I fed them their evening meal and I'd like to think that was because they missed me, however, it was probably due to the fact that they wanted their food.

Day 28 - July 16, 2004 (4 weeks old today!)
A relatively short entry today as I have quite a lot to do and not enough time to do it in. We've finally made what I consider to be good progress in the weaning department. When I enter the kitten room now and get the newspaper, Madam Hooch, Harry and Hermione all come running over to eat straight away. They no longer need any encouragement from me to go the saucer, they automatically go straight to it and start eating which is great. McGonagall still needs some prompting but when she's ready to eat, she will also eat straight from the saucer with no worries. Ron is still very, very slow and obviously does not like my cooking at all because he still won't eat from the saucer. For the last 24 hours I've actually gotten him to have some of the food from my fingers which is still good progress, so I'm hoping that he will soon catch up with the others. Apart from that, they are all doing really well and have been sniffing around their litter tray as well which is great to see, although when I looked in the tray today, a tiny, tiny patch of the litter was damp which would make me wonder if a baby had actually been in there already.
