Kitten Diaries
Cacao
June 2004
Cacao's 2nd Kitten Diary - June 2004 to October 2004
Day 13 - July 1, 2004
A very boring day for the Potters indeed. They have done nothing all day and there is absolutely nothing to report. Their weight gains are fairly average. Certainly nothing out of the ordinary, however, Cacao has such a long, slender build that I wouldn't expect the Potters to have the sorts of weights that Tia's babies had. I'm still pleased with their progress though and they all look very well. I'm rather surprised that Cacao hasn't tried to move them from the box yet, particularly now that they're in the kitten room. Obviously she prefers them in the box so it should be interesting once they start climbing out. No doubts as they climb out, she will be stuffing them back in.

Day 12 - June 30, 2004
There's no photos today sorry as I didn't remember to charge the camera batteries and when I went upstairs to take photos I soon found out that I couldn't. One of these days I will buy spare batteries for the camera! Well the Potters have now moved house and are residing in the Kitten Room. The time had come for them to leave our bedroom and have a home of their own. You always know when they're ready because they start trying to climb out of the box which is a good indication to help them move house. It will be a lot better for Cacao as she has the whole room to herself and the babies, they can come to no harm in there and if she chooses to, she can now move them out of the box and onto the sofa or the chair. The babies can now pull themselves up much easier and are moving around quite a lot. I think when they are older, Cacao will have her hands full with them. So apart from moving house, there's really very little to say about them as still all they do is eat, sleep, squeal and move about. I find myself longing for them to hit that 3 weeks of age part where they suddenly become little "people".

Day 11 - June 29, 2004
The Potters have now reached that stage in their live where they have finally realised what their legs are for and they have all been trying their hardest to move around on them properly. They were really funny last night (not that Cacao was amused because the babies kept crawling over to the hole/door in the kitten box. They were trying to make their escape for freedom. All I saw for 10 minutes was little white and black heads popping through the hole. Every time one of them tried, Cacao grabbed the baby and dragged him/her back. She then decided the best way to stop them was to sit on them and grab the ones left over in both her front legs and hug them really tight. That didn't work because the babies she held in her paws slipped between them and scrambled straight up over her back and towards the hole. So the whole process was repeated again and Cacao was getting quite panicky by the end. I then closed the gap up by folding one of the box lids on the inside so there was no door for them to get through any more. This means of course that Cacao can only get in and out the box by jumping but she was a lot happier now that she knew her babies couldn't escape. It's really lovely to see them starting to move about properly and they have no qualms whatsoever about standing on (and squashing) any littermates that happens to be in their way.

Day 10 - June 28, 2004
There is no update for today I'm sorry as I spent all of yesterday in the back yard which badly needed some attention. Every time I popped inside though to check on the Potters they were all fine. Cacao has been taking little strolls around the house now just to get out of the bedroom and she really seems to appreciate it. She never wanders far and as soon as one of the Potters cries, she is bashing on the door to be let back in with them.

Day 9 - June 27, 2004
Our little Potters are still doing really well and all eyes are now fully open. It's lovely to see tiny little eyes looking up at me when I pick up the Potters for cuddles. The Siamese are much quieter and don't protest anywhere near as much as the Orientals do when it comes to being handled. It really is this stage of their lives and this part of the diary where it truly is a struggle to think of what to actually write. Apart from the fact that they're gaining weight and doing well, there is no "daily news" so to speak. Once they're moving around more and personalities start to develop then it is a different story. As you can see by the photos below, I managed to take individual photos of the Potters today although to the majority of people reading the diary, I'm sure they all look the same but at least you will know who is who.

Day 8 - June 26, 2004
At long last! McGonagall and Madam Hooch have finally started the eye opening process. I was starting to get a bit concerned as the Siamese have had their eyes open for a couple of days now so I was really pleased this morning to see that the eyes were opening up and are clear. The Potters really don't do very much at all at this stage in their lives. Their entire 24 hours consists of sleeping (a lot), eating, and moving (or trying to move). McGonagall is the loudest baby of all and objects very strongly to being weighed. When she squeals it is almost deafening so I'm hoping that she when she gets a bit older she will grown out of this habit. Today's photos are not great but no matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't get decent pics of the little darlings. I think the Potters will remain in our bedroom with us another week before being moved out. Normally the babies are put in the kitten room once they reach 2 days of age, however our kitten room has been occupied by the R's. So in order to put the Potters in the Kitten Room, I first need to find another home somewhere in the house for the R's.

Day 7 - June 25, 2004 (1 week old today!)
Our little gems are 1 week old today and this time around I can actually say that the week has not flown by at all. It has in fact gone rather slowly. As our 5 babies have made it this far I decided the time had come to actually give them all some names as I really can't keep referring to them as the "babies". All 5 little ones will be named after characters from Harry Potter, of which both my daughter and I are massive fans, so we have:
Name
Baby
Sex
Hopefully I've got the sexes right!.
McGonagall
Oriental Black Tortie
Female
Madame Hooch
Oriental Black Tortie

Ron Weasley
Siamese

Hermione

Naturally, our 5 little babies will now be collectively referred to as "The Potters" :) Cacao is still over protective of her babies and while she is happy for me to stroke them while they are in the box and touch them, when it comes to weighing, she will only allow me to have them for a certain amount of time and If I have them any longer than that, she reaches out of the box and pats me on the hand to tell me it's time to put her baby back. I still can't help but feel the babies are very small however I did do a comparison with the R's only to find that they are along the same scale as what the R's were on Day 7 so possibly I'm just being a bit paranoid.
