Day 6 - January 31, 2008

The one thing I am very disappointed about with our Airports is that I am really, really struggling to get decent photos of them. They are all gorgeous children with such appealing little faces yet in my photos they tend to look like blobs. Actually, I am sure that the settings on my camera are not right but until Graham has a chance to look at it for me you will all just have to put up with the "blobs".

Amaretto has now decided that as she is the "senior" mummy in the room, she will take it in turns to visit all the posh boxes and make sure the younger mummies are doing a good job. So far this morning I have found her in Lucy's box, and then an hour later she was found in Cointreau's box and in the meantime, poor Nocello is left having to feed The Airports as well as her own 2 babies. I actually wish that all mum's would just jump into Lucy's very large box, with all their babies and then all just share one box. Now wouldn't that be lovely :)

Tiny little eyes on our Airports are starting to show signs of opening up now which is adorable. Considering that they are Orientals and that 2 of them are Torties, they are actually very happy go lucky babies who don't even moan at me when I pick them up to kiss them or weigh them.

Day 5 - January 30, 2008

Our heating is now back on :) :) :) This means that at last I could open up the windows in the kitten room! Now you may think it's odd that the central heating is on, yet the windows are open but there is a very good reason for this. Central heating causes a dry heat in the home which can help bacteria etc. to thrive and it's not unusual for kittens who are kept warm by central heating to start off life with sticky eyes or a bit of conjunctivitis. So if the windows are open it means that lots of fresh air is coming in (yes some heat does escape) which helps to eliminate chances of any bacteria thriving yet the babies are still warm.

There are no photos in today's entries and the entries are quite short because I have had an awful lot to do today, including going to the tip, and we have 2 babies leaving tomorrow so I have a mountain of paperwork to sort out.

I really have no motivation at all for kitten diaries today which is probably apparent when you read today's entries. The darling Airports continue to thrive and I just can't help but smile as I watch them in their box sleeping or feeding from mum. Amaretto is such a doting mummy and I do sometimes feel that she is never given enough credit. The problem with Retto is that she is such a happy little cat who just wants to be loved, be warm, and out of all our Orientals, Amaretto is the one who is always in the background so to speak. Retto will probably only have 1 or 2 more litters after this one and they she will be spayed because she is now almost 5 years of age. She is such a darling cat though and we love her dearly and I just know that our little Airports will be just as perfect as their mummy is.

Day 4 - January 29, 2008

What do I say about our Airports today? It's so difficult because at this age they do absolutely nothing other than eat, sleep, and scratch each other during milk bar batters. There is no use me trying to put into words just how fantastic these little babies are because unless, like me, you have a real thing for Havana's and Torties, you could never understand just how special this litter is. Although I'm sure Teen certainly understands :)

La Guardia has the most gorgeous little tortie face with such a myriad of colours and the Tortie pattern on her face is something else whereas Kingsford Smith has much less tortie mingling at this stage.

Day 3 - January 28, 2008

This morning, each kitten diary will start off with the babies' colours and sexes. The sexes have got to be right because this time around, they were not sexed by me :) Instead, during Teen's visit yesterday, she very kindly sexed each of the babies for me and I trust her judgment far more than I do my own. Before I go into all that though, I would like to say a huge thanks to Teen and Tone for their visit yesterday and also for the loan of their fantastic kitten pen which we will need to use very soon and we'd have been well and truly stuck without it so thanks guys, you are absolute angels.

Our 3 Airports all made weight gains today, their first proper gains since they were born so it would appear that at long last, everything is starting to settle down now. Such a pity that Heathrow is not female because I'm sure if he had of been then there would be a strong chance he would have joined the Maroochydore home as he is a descendant from the gorgeous Maroochydore Vivianno. You never know though as the Sex Change Fairy has visited our home on more than one occasion ;) I am in love with our little Airports because I adore the Havana's and the Torties have, of course, always been a great love of mine so to get 2 Torties and 1 Havana in a litter is definitely the perfect litter for me. But no, we are not keeping any of these babies.

Day 2 - January 27, 2008

All diaries are the same today for a number of reasons, the first of which being that we lost Bakewell last night. I don't know if it's because perhaps he/she was born prematurely remembering that her mum delivered 3 more babies 2 days after she delivered Bakewell. As each day passed, Bakewell did not gain any weight and continued to make small losses each day. Losing Bakewell is a tremendous loss of a beautiful little fur child.

The 2nd and 3rd reasons as to why there are no entries today is because yesterday we had kitten families visiting our older babies so it was a very busy day and I didn't actually get yesterday's diaries online until today. Then we will be having the pleasure of Teen and Tone's company very shortly this afternoon which we are both really looking forward to. Diaries will be back to normal tomorrow with photos.

Day 1 - January 26, 2008

We do have some news this morning that I am totally thrilled about and that is the fact that one of our Havana's, Kingsford Smith, is in fact, an Oriental Chocolate Tortie. The reason I am so delighted with this is that we have not bred a Chocolate Tortie since we produced GR PR & CHA Schimmel Chilli Tequila (Kyla) in our first ever Oriental litter. I have such a soft spot for darling Kyla so to have finally produced another one 4 years later is marvellous. Of course there will only ever be one Kyla and I've never seen a Chocolate Tortie equal to her and doubt that I ever will, but I am sure that Kingsford Smith is going to be a little darling :)

The night passed by very quietly although that only thing that worries me a little is that Amaretto seems to spend as much time out of the box as she does in there. I can't help but think even though she only had the 3 babies that yesterday's birth has taken it's toll on her so it is a huge relief that Nocello is now being "Super Mummy" and when Amaretto isn't in the box, Nocello feeds the Airports as well.

Our Airports don't seem to mind which mother they feed from, so long as they have access to milk they are perfectly happy. Having now been in the box with Nocello and the Tarts for 24 hours, both mum's and all 6 babies smell the same.

Birth - January 25, 2008

Where on earth do I start????????? A few weeks ago, Graham and I had looked at both Amaretto and one of our other ladies and were quite concerned as both ladies were actually looking very large, or more to the point, they looked pregnant. Amaretto was the smaller of the two and we could not understand it as it was just not possible. Both boys had been segregated the day Tone did our stud room for us and we certainly don't have any other entire boys in the home. We decided we would keep a very close eye on both ladies.

Yesterday, we looked at them again and one lady was looking an awful lot larger whilst the Amaretto had definitely expanded but not to the same degree. This morning, the reason as to the weight gain was very apparent. I woke up this morning, came straight downstairs to get food for our new mum's (Cointreau, Tia Lusso & Nocello) and make up a milk mixture and took that back upstairs to sort out all the babies, weigh them, and make sure everything was okay, only to find a massive drama occurring with Nocello.

I came back downstairs, and heard the faintest of cries. I ran into the back room and discovered that Amaretto had gone into labour and already delivered one baby. In total panic and shock I grabbed Amaretto and the baby who was incredibly cold and took them both straight upstairs. The 2 heat pads were still plugged in as I had not sorted our room out from the day before. I grabbed some new bedding and put it in my wardrobe and put Amaretto and her Tortie baby on the bedding but the room was still cold. In case you hadn't guessed, we STILL have no heating in the home and are still waiting for the engineer to come back with the part and fix the boiler. I ran back downstairs to grab a new heater that we had only bought the day before, took it straight up to the bedroom and plugged it in and it made a huge difference.

After settling mum and baby down, I knew mum wasn't finished yet but she was having a rest, so I flew back into the other kitten room in time to find Nocello's last baby halfway through being born. By this stage, I had no idea if I was coming or going as you can imagine! I then weighed the new baby, made the decision after examining Nocello that there were definitely no more. I changed the bedding, left Cells to settle, ran back into our room and a few minutes later, baby number 2 was appearing and how delighted was I????????????? A Havana :) I have such a soft spot for the Havana's, particularly as Amaretto is such a darling girl so Graham and I were thrilled to bits. Again I did the usual weighing, I also had to do the cord and deliver the placenta for this baby, and then while Amaretto settled down with her 2 children, I took more bedding downstairs to be washed, came back up to check on Nocello and her 2 newborns, they were all settled. I then went back downstairs, made 2 cups of coffee and took mine back upstairs to be with Amaretto as labour was definitely not over yet.

At approximately 1110 Amaretto started pushing again and this baby did take a little longer but again we had another beautiful little Havana child. When everything had been done, I then picked Amaretto up to examine her and was incredibly relieved that there were definitely no more babies. Now you might think these are odd names for some new children, however Graham had wanted this theme for a little while, so please meet.............................................

Rightly or wrongly, I made the decision to move Amaretto and her airports straight into the kitten room to share Nocello's posh box. As you know, Nocello has had problems with motherhood, and Amaretto is an experienced mummy. Both ladies can share babies and Amaretto can guide Nocello on how to care for the children. Nocello was delighted to see new babies and Amaretto in her box, so much so that she instantly lady her head against Retto's shoulder, gave her a kiss, and then started purring while she gathered her own 3 children to her. Amaretto was quite tired as you can imagine so she snuggled up with Nocello, I pointed the Airports in the direction of Retto's nipples, and Amaretto promptly put her arms around her babies and fell asleep.

There are no photos at all as it's been such a manic few hours and I have so very much to do and am also constantly checking on the mum's and babies every hour. As well as this, now that Amaretto has given birth, we know for certain that the other lady in the home who is expanding is obviously also due any moment now. Amaretto and the other lady obviously had their own little dalliances with the boys at the same time that Cointreau, Lucy and Cells were mated, although we had absolutely no idea. This is why stud boys should not run in the house alongside the girls.

Right now, we are just grateful to have gotten through this morning in one piece and so far, the babies seem to be doing okay. We shall now be waiting for the next (and last!!!) litter to be born and that is fairly imminent.
