Day 6 - August 31, 2007

Entries are quite short today sorry, quite short with no photos, because our beautiful, but naughty, Canberra left us early this afternoon so it has been quite a busy day. I also seem to be getting the flu so I'm not particularly motivated to write entries to be honest with you. Also, one of our other ladies is due to go into labour today so my time has been divided between running up and downstairs to our bedroom to be with her.

We're now starting to see eyes open more fully on our Ray J's which I'm delighted about. It's such a special moment when the babies' eyes open up and they start to see the world around them. The babies were visited today by Julie and Andy (Canberra's new family) and Barry was extremely well behaved whereas Jonesy was protesting in no uncertain terms that he had no desire to be picked up and cuddled bless him. Amaretto did not mind at all that her babies were being handled by "strangers" and was content to just lay in her box and feed Ray. Weights are still perfectly acceptable and it is wonderful to have an "easy" babies that just continue to progress as they should. One thing I'm finding about the Oriental Tabbies is that they are definitely much more photographic than a lot of the other colours.

Day 5 - August 30, 2007
We have now reached Day 5 and there are some very small changes happening with our Ray J's. Barry is the first of our baby to lose his cord, it fell off overnight, so now I will wait and see who will be next, Jonesy or Ray. All 3 of our babies now have started to open their eyes. It will be another few days I think before they are fully open because we're at that stage at the moment where there is just the tiniest little opening apparent on all 3 of our babies. They really are so very beautiful and I love the vivid red/chocolate colour that Jonesy has. Why he couldn't have been a girl is totally beyond me! Again last night when I weighed the babies, all 3 had gained weight so at the moment, things are progressing exactly as they should. Amaretto is doing extremely well although I will be keeping a close eye on her as her children become older because Retts does have a tendency to go quite thin when she is feeding babies so she will be monitored throughout the next 13 weeks.

Day 4 - August 29, 2007
Today was "house moving" day for our Ray J's. The time had come to move them out of our bedroom and into the 2nd kitten room and I have to say that the move went extremely well and Amaretto was not bothered at all by the move and she seemed perfectly happy to be in her own "posh box". She has also enjoyed having a room all to herself. Of course Ray, Barry and Jonesy don't even really know that they had been moved because at 4 days of age, they are still not particularly aware of their surroundings and so long as they have their mum and the milk bar, then they are happy. I was quite pleased with last nights' weigh in sessions and again, all 3 babies had made acceptable gains so things are definitely going in the right direction at the moment. Our older babies who were "evicted" from the kitten room so that the younger ones could move in were not bothered at all, particularly as they have been sleeping downstairs for the past couple of nights. They all think they are grown up children now and can hang out with all the adults. None of our Ray J's eyes have started opening yet, but it's still very early days, nor have their cords fallen off but I'm sure we will start seeing some changes within the next few days. I do think that as each day passes, they are becoming more and more beautiful as is very apparent by the photos below :) I must say that it's so much easier to take photos of the babies now that I no longer have to climb inside my wardrobe.

Day 3 - August 28, 2007
Last night's visit with Caryll, Ray and Jacqui went extremely well, but then it's always lovely to see our mates. It was also great to meet Sharon and Steve of Withajay Siamese at long last. I can honestly say that Sharon is just as fantastic in the flesh as she is via a computer. It would now appear that one of our Oriental Chocolate Tabby kittens has a new home waiting for him when he comes of age. There is no better home than this one with the "Blue Paw Clan" and if we couldn't have kept one of these babies back ourselves, then the next best thing is to home one with our friends who are like family to us. If I were to come back as a cat, I would love to live with the Blue Paws :) I was most unimpressed with Amaretto this morning because I when I went up into the kitten room to feed Retto, I was horrified to see that the babies had been moved...........................into Graham's darn clothes shelves. But the problem was, I think at some point they must have rolled out of the clothes shelves, and onto the clothes at the bottom of the wardrobe, which fortunately were soft jumpers thank goodness! I found Retto up on the 3rd shelf in amidst the jumpers, whilst her 3 children were right at the bottom. This means that at some point, hopefully today, I will be evicting the Tails of Hans Christian Anderson, and the Capitals, from the 2nd kitten room and I will be moving Amaretto and the Ray J's into that room. In there, they will have their own peace and quiet, Amaretto will be in a "posh box" and will feel less inclined to move the babies about. Also, there is nowhere else in that room to move them to. I was delighted last night to see that all 3 of our Ray J's had made very good weight gains and if they continue along this way I shall be quite pleased. I just want to speak about colour for a moment. As previously mentioned, our 2 "Chocolate" Tabbies are totally different shades. It was suggested to me that perhaps Jonesy could in fact be a Cinnamon Tabby. Now this is something that had never crossed my mind. Both Amaretto and Ashanti do have Cinnamon way back in their pedigrees, but I do not know enough about the Cinnamon colour to know whether or not it would be possible to have a Cinnamon in this litter. It is not my field of expertise. I have sent an email to a breeder who I know does specialise in Cinnamon in the hopes that she can point me in the right direction so it would appear that our Ray J's litter is turning out to be rather interesting to say the least.

Day 2 - August 27, 2007

Unfortunately, there are still no photos for today's entry, not even for our newest babies. I had the best intentions in the world but sometimes, days just do now pan out exactly how we want them to. It's actually nothing short of a miracle that I have managed to get a few sentences in each kitten diary today.

Tonight will be special for our Oriental Chocolate Tabby babies because they will be having a visit from the "man in the white coat" and his "cat show addicted wife", both of whom will no doubt have words with me when they read this entry :) As you know, our new babies are only 2 weeks old so this will be their first set of official visitors which will be lovely. When I did the 24 hour weigh in last night, I was pleased to see that both Barry and Jonesy had gained since birth, however Ray had lost 5 grams. This is not uncommon during the first 24-48 hours of any newborns' life and I have resisted the temptation to weigh them again this morning as they all appear to be feeding. When I weigh them at approximately 7pm tonight, if Ray has lost yet more, I will intervene. Amaretto is being a superb mother, as per usual, and she totally adores her new children. She's more than happy for me to handle them though because she is quite experienced and does not tend to panic like first time mum's do when their babies are taken from them.

Birth to Day 1 - August 25 to 26, 2007

I really do not know what to write for this kitten diary. Amaretto's due date was supposed to be August 26, so on the 25th, I attended a cat show with Cacao and Ashanti while Graham remained at home and was keeping an eye on Amaretto, as well as the rest of the "gang". All was going really well and both cats had fantastic results at the show, then during the afternoon, I had a phone call from Graham telling me that Amaretto had gone into labour. I could not believe it..........................this was the first time that I had ever not been there for one of our births. I knew that I had nothing to worry about because the babies would be in good hands and Graham certainly makes just as good a midwife as I do, but the thought of not being there was really horrid. Graham and I spoke on the phone throughout the births and he successfully delivered 2 beautiful children and both he, and Amaretto coped incredibly well. Graham had to do the cord on Jonesy as Amaretto was not particularly keen. It was a nightmare in the respect that our bedroom was quite hot, and Amaretto apparently wanted to walk around while delivering her babies which certainly makes life a tad difficult. Ray was actually born in Graham's clothes shelves in the wardrobe, rather than on the birthing bedding that had been set up in the wardrobe for days now. Whilst I was on the phone to Graham, he weighed and coloured the babies and I was told that Ray was a mini Ashanti, in other words, a Brown (Black) Oriental Tabby, Jonesy was allegedly a Blue Oriental Tabby although Graham felt the colouring wasn't right for a Blue and I told him over the phone that he would almost have to be a Blue because to the best of my knowledge, Ashanti did not carry the "b" gene, (meaning he is not a Chocolate carrier). Prior to this litter, 2 of our other ladies that Ashanti had mated are both chocolate carriers and we had no chocolate babies in those litters. Towards the end of the show, Graham had said there was definitely another baby in there but nothing else was happening so after the show, I drove home as fast as humanly possible whilst keeping to the speed limit :) and I arrived home, brought Ashanti and Cacao inside and let them out of their carriers, I then went upstairs to relieve Graham of midwife duty. He came downstairs while I examined both babies, declared that both were looking to be male (typical really!), but both babies were fine, Ray was already feeding, and Amaretto was in her element, hugging her babies close to her and looking content, but quite tired. I flew back downstairs made a drink, unpacked the car and put a load of washing on and I then took my drink back upstairs where I could sit with Amaretto. At 1833, we had a leg, nothing else, just a leg hanging out and Amaretto was putting an awful lot of effort into trying to deliver this baby so I just chatted calmly with her and stroked her gently. The other leg appeared, then half the body appeared but the shoulders, front legs and head were still not delivered. It was at this time that Amaretto chose to stand up and try and go for a walk so I put her back in the wardrobe and the action of her standing up and moving forced the 2 front legs and shoulders to come out. So now all were were missing was a head! I waited until Amaretto was pushing and then I gently but firmly gripped the baby around the body and over both shoulders and I gently pulled as Amaretto pushed and fortunately, the head and placenta were both delivered safe and sound. The sac had already broken so I quickly did the cord, vigorously dried the babied and weighed/sexed him. I then gave him back to Amaretto with his head pointing in the direction of the milk bar and Retto put both her arms around him and snuggled in with her little family. I came back downstairs to tell Graham that we had yet another Oriental Chocolate Tabby and it was then he decided upon names for our 3 boys (well possible boys, you know what my sexing is like!), and collectively they will be known as the "Ray J's" in tribute to Ray Jones who tragically lost his life in a car accident on Saturday. We would now like to introduce you to our beautiful new Ray J's.........................................

By 10pm all 3 babies were well and truly latched on and feeding and it does appear that our 2 Chocolate Tabbies have different patterns but as of yet I have not been able to examine them closely. They have been permanently latched on to their mum since last night, it's now 11:19am and they are still suckling away and I have no wishes to disturb them while they are feeding because it is so important that they are latched on and getting the colostrum that they need for their own immune systems. We are totally delighted to have our first Oriental Chocolate Tabbies and we are thrilled to bits that our Ashanti is now a proven Chocolate carrier as this opens up a realm of possibilities for our future breeding. As you can imagine, everything is just all up in the air today, particularly as one of our older babies, Snow Queen, was leaving home at 9am this morning and I had done no paperwork at all to say nothing of the fact that we have copious amounts of washing now, normal washing, show washing and birthing washing all to be done. I would like to thank my husband, Graham, for doing such a fantastic job in my absence, he really was a star and I am so grateful to him. Now whether or not I will be able to talk him into letting one of these Oriental Chocolate Tabbies stay with us I have no idea...............................
