Kitten Diaries
Amaretto
August 2004
Amaretto's 1st Kitten Diary - August 2004 to November 2004
Day 20 - August 24, 2004
Finally!!! I have something different to tell you about the Gumnuts. I'd been lying in bed watching Animal Hospital and heard some rather loud squeaks coming from the kitten room. When I went in to investigate, I was stunned to see that Cuddlepie was out of the bed and walking around on the sofa bed. Banksia Man and Snugglepot were squealing because they obviously felt they were missing out on something. Within minutes, both of them had followed their brother and they too were walking around on the sofa. I was absolutely amazed as they were only 19 days old!!!!! This meant of course that I had to do some very quick rearranging in there as my fear was that they would go walkabouts and fall off the sofa. So I did what I've done with previous litters and put the chair right up against the sofa so the only place they can go is onto the chair and then back onto the sofa. The little ones were thrilled with their latest trick and were really enjoying themselves.

Day 19 - August 23, 2004
One thing I've noticed about our Gumnuts is that they are now sitting up a lot better. Whereas before they would be trying to sit up but would wobble about and use each other to lean on, they are now able to sit up on their own without too much wobbling. They also are climbing further and further towards the front of their hooded bed whenever I go in to visit them. Apart from that however, there's nothing to tell you except for the fact that they are such incredibly sweet little babies who are a joy to spend time with.

Day 18 - August 22, 2004
Our Gumnuts are doing very well as usual. I really don't know what to tell you about them though as nothing has changed since yesterday. They are all thriving though and seem to become more alert every day. Amaretto is still very protective of them although she is more than happy for her "human" family members to make regular visits to the babies to stroke them and pick them up. One thing you must do when you go in there though and give Amaretto plenty of attention. Even while you are handling her babies, you still have to be stroking Amaretto at the same time. She's always been a very sociable girl and is obviously missing the daily life now that she is shut away with her babies.

Day 17 - August 21, 2004
I've actually been out today for quite a while so there's not much to tell you about our Gumnuts. One thing I've noticed is that they don't sleep quite as much now and when I go into the kitten room, if they have been asleep, they will wake up and start crawling about with more energy than they had last week. They also seem to move further than they did last week so the progress is coming along really nicely. They are really very sweet little babies and even at this age, I can see a marked difference between Cuddlepie & Snugglepot in looks. Mind you, that will probably change as they get a bit older and no doubt I will have no idea who is who!

Day 16 - August 20, 2004
There is actually not a great deal to tell you about our darling Gumnuts because they haven't done anything out of the ordinary really. All they actually do is move around, eat and sleep. I am really pleased though because when I went in there first thing this morning, I started speaking to the Gumnuts and they automatically opened their eyes and put their little heads to one side as if they were really listening to me and they even started crawling closer to me. I do love it when our babies show signs that they recognise who I am and I do think it's so very important during this stage that they hear and see all of the humans in our family on a very regular basis as early human contact helps greatly with socialisation. (in my personal opinion only). Cuddlepie has now overtaken Banksia Man in the weight department again however there's actually very little difference in the weights of all 3 Gumnuts.

Day 15 - August 19, 2004
I'm delighted to see that at just 2 weeks of age, our darling Gumnuts are already trying to climb out of bed and walk. Not only that, both Snugglepot and Cuddlepie have been seen on a number of occasions grooming themselves which is just so sweet. Banksia Man has now overtaken his brothers in the weight department, just by a few grams but he is officially now the largest of all 3 babies. That is quite surprising when you consider the rough start he had to life. Just like Cacao, Amaretto will sit on a bed away from her babies when they're sleeping and will sit there in a "sphynx" position as if she is guarding them. Oddly enough I never noticed this with Tia Maria so I'm wondering if perhaps it's simply an "Oriental thing". I've taken some individual photos of the Gumnuts today so their new kitten families can see how their babies are changing and growing.

Day 14 - August 18, 2004 (2 weeks old today!)
It is actually a huge relief to have the Gumnuts out of our bedroom. As much as I love having them in there, the time comes for them to have their own space and for hubby and I to have an actual bedroom to ourselves rather than a nursery. I actually managed to take a couple of photos today which I haven't had the time to do in such a very long time. All 3 babies are doing very well and they seem so alert at this young age which surprises me. They all know the sound of my voice now and even Banksia Man does not protest as much as he used to when I handle him. One bonus of having them in the kitten room now is that because there is so much more room in there, I am able to sit on the floor next to them for ages, talking to them and stroking them which I didn't really have the room to do in our bedroom. Amaretto is still being an incredibly loving mum with her little ones and she's forever grooming them and giving them lots of cuddles which is really wonderful to see.
